Archrivals UCL stood on the opposite half of the court facing our own Lady Bears when the ULU Cup final took place in London. With only half the team there for the beginning of the warm-up, UCL's faces looked a bit too smug before the game began. However, with determination and confidence from previous wins against the fellow University of London college, RHUL Lady Bears played to win their first victory of the season.
UCL and Royal Holloway may belong to the same university, but that is where the similarities both begin and end. After several hot-tempered games behind them in the season 09/10, all of which RHUL left as winners, the ULU Cup final promised emotion, fighting spirit and excitement. Both teams had brought fans in the form of their male equivalents, and the audience was hardly disappointed. The game was a tight one, with Royal Holloway in constant lead by a few points, and a weighing game which seem to be able to go either way.
With a successful zone defence, RHUL forced UCL to rely on their, usually rather accurate, shooting. This day, however, much thanks to the BEARS supporters, the UCL players found themselves repeatedly in trouble and without options to shoot, dribble or pass. The height advantage kept UCL in the game, and challenged the Lady Bears once more to work hard inside.
Finally, with a couple of minutes left, Royal Holloway went in after a time-out and worked together to settle the game. Losing the cup to UCL was not an option. With fast-break upon fast-break and a solid shooting from the ladies, RHUL left UCL behind on the score board and finally ended the game with a score of 43-52, consequently winning their first victory of the season.
Man of the Match was awarded to Kristine Flyvholm.
