RHUL 82–49 Brunel 2nds

The first home game for Men’s Basketball resulted in a win against the team from Brunel University.

Quite tall and athletic at first sight, the guest players gave the impression of being an even match for The BEARS. They however exerted no significant pressure on offence, so Nick Heffernan was scoring his famous three-pointers early in the game. Despite the successful shooting however, the first quarter resulted in only a two-point advantage for RHUL: it was time to get their heads in the game and work harder, better, faster and stronger. After a talk from Coach Steve Bucknall, the BEARS then took advantage of open opportunities; punishing Brunel for Sloppy defence and opened up a lead in the 2nd and 3rd quarters by hustling on our defence and limiting Brunel’s shot opportunities.

The intensity of the game developed through the last quarter and although the opponents made a big effort, the Bears stayed strong. Our zone-defence accepted no penetrators and with Chris Ratteree and Julian Bailes picking up a lot of steals leading to a succession of fast break points the Bears pulled away with the victory. Arnold Junior was the games top scorer by battling away inside with the help of RHUL’s post players Nicolas Dumont and Romeo McDonald.

The BEARS made a good effort and finished with a thirty-three point advantage. The top scorers of the game were Arnold Junior (19), Nick Heffernan (14) and Ian Jeffery (10).
